Thin plates of a warm, mottled rust brown, flecked like tortoiseshell, divide the layers from one another and cap the top. Four of the layers are an emerald green and four are so deep a green that they read almost black. Nothing is included beneath it: the lowest plate in the stack is the foot.

Concentric From Above, a Stair From the Side

A stepped stack is a form with two completely different readings and the proportions have to serve both. Seen from above it is a set of concentric rectangles and the step-in between slabs is the only variable that matters; seen from the side it is a stair, and what matters instead is the ratio of slab thickness to step. Here each layer steps in by a narrow margin, except once, halfway up, where the stack steps in deeply, so from above the rectangles fall into two nested groups and from the side the stair has a landing. The dark edges are what make either reading possible: without them the green bodies would run into one another and the stack would read as a single tapered block.

A writing desk or a sill will hold it, and it is a piece people turn in the hand rather than walk past. It wants a source behind or beside rather than overhead, since the green only shows when light is coming through the slabs rather than onto the edges. A pale surface under it lifts the lowest slab. Each slab is set inside the last, so from above the stack is a set of concentric rectangles and from the side it is a stair, and neither view suggests the other.

Slab Counts, the Green and Delivery

Delivery follows a 3–4 week build as standard, or a 5–6 week build if bespoke. The slab count is raised or dropped, the green is exchanged for an amber, and the edges are finished in a paler tone. The stack is made at other heights, and the step count follows the run instead of staying at eight. The slab count is the one variable that changes the object rather than simply its size, since the step ratio is what the whole form is read by. Packing goes round the widest slab and the stack travels upright, lifted out by its foot rather than by the top. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Stacked construction is indoor sculpture at desk scale; a stepped solid is contemporary sculpture; and the green slabs are resin sculpture.

Specification

Height

26.8cm

Width

26.9cm

Depth

21.6cm

Material

Cast Green Resin with 3D-Printed Plates
