A brushed stainless steel block in a warm bronze tone is supplied, made to the same width as the loop that stands on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eOne Smooth Face Among All That Texture\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA scaled surface has no natural place for the eye to rest, which is a problem on a piece this size and is what the smooth face exists to solve. It runs down the inside of one arm of the loop, and the rosettes of scales are laid out around it, so every run of scales leads back to that one quiet surface. The colour is carried across the smooth face as well, blue above and green below, so it reads as part of the loop rather than as a window cut into it. The metal is brushed rather than polished, which keeps it from competing with several thousand small highlights above it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStanding 69cm on its block, it belongs on a console in a hall, with room to walk past it on at least one side. A pale wall behind is best, because the opening through the loop takes its colour from whatever is behind it. Light catching the smooth face gives the loop one bright, unbroken surface among all the texture. That smooth face reads from the far end of a hall, and everything else waits until you arrive.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eMoving the Smooth Face, and Getting It In\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eGive it 3–4 weeks as a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks as a bespoke commission. The smooth face is put somewhere else on the loop, the green is taken out, and the block is left in plain brushed steel without its bronze tone. Move the smooth face and the rosettes of scales are re-laid around it, since every run of scales is set out from it. Loop and block travel apart, and the loop is lifted with both hands under its foot, never by the scales along its arch.
