It is a broad upright mass, deeply lobed with fin-like projections at the sides, pierced by two round openings, a wide one near the crown and a narrower one below it. The green holds almost to the middle of the piece and then gives way to amber over a few centimetres, so the object reads in two distinct materials, and the dark green that returns at the foot ties the bottom back to the top. The openings are true circles in an otherwise entirely irregular form, which is what makes them register: everything around them is lobed, rippled and asymmetric, and they are not. Between and around them the surface is worked into close vertical ripples with deep hollows, so the mass never presents a flat face. Being shallow, it is a broad screen rather than a boulder, and it changes completely between the front view and the narrow edge. The clouding is placed wet, so no two carry the same distribution of white.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 115cm it is a floor piece, and both of its openings come into view together as you approach it from a few steps away. It is wide for its depth, so it wants a run of clear wall rather than a corner. A hallway, a study, a landing or the end of a room all work, and a plinth is not needed. Depth of field is what it wants: open space behind puts daylight through the openings, whereas a wall close behind turns them into two dark discs. The narrow edge on is worth showing too, so a spot approached from the side is not wasted. Where the colours meet is the decision that changes the object most: the amber can be brought up to the middle of the piece, dropped to the last quarter, or left out for a single green. The palette itself runs to a blue with grey, a smoke with amber, and a plain jade. The number of openings is set at order, from one to four, and the crown opening can be widened until the top reads as an arch instead of a mass. The marble base is a choice at order, a block made to the size in the specification and cut in any stone or colour, with a deeper one available for a low surface. The sculpture travels in one case, standing, with both openings packed out, and a base ordered with it is boxed alongside; it is a two-person lift because the width makes it unwieldy rather than because of the weight.
