Lion, cap and column are one piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Gold-Touched Lion Above a Painted Shaft\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe gold is kept to two places, the crown and the chest, so it marks the lion without hiding the clear carving of the mane. Inside the shaft the scenes keep to black and silver, which lets the small touches of gold above them stand out. The pale cap sets the clear lion apart from the column, and the edges of the shaft run crisp to its foot. The clear mane is cut deep, so its curls hold shadow without any colour at all. Each casting differs slightly in where the gold falls.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 120cm the piece belongs in a hall or on a landing, at the side of a doorway, where the scenes are passed at chest height. Light from above catches the gold at the crown; a pale wall shows the drawing. Close by is best, since the gold touches and the drawing are details to discover. The gold can be extended over the whole mane or left out, and other subjects can be drawn in the shaft. The flowering stem can become bamboo or a pine branch, and gold can replace the silver in the drawing. A black cap can replace the pale one, and the lion can be left wholly clear or fully gilded. The shaft is made to whatever height is wanted. Its crate holds it lying down; two people should lift it to standing.
