Rather than a solid mass it is a fan: the material leaves the block as a single stem and immediately splits into a great many fine fronds that rise and spread, some ending in points and some in flattened blades. It is colourless, with gold and dark brown flecks caught along the fronds.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Fan of Fine Fronds, Flecked Along Their Length\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fronds are what this is, and they are numerous. They divide, divide again, and lean out to both sides, so the object spreads twice as wide as it is deep and reads as a piece of coral or a wind-caught flame rather than as a stone. Between and behind them the eye passes right through the piece, which is why a form with this much material in it still looks light. The flecks then do something specific: because each frond is narrow, a fleck sitting in one occupies most of its width and reads as a bright interruption along an otherwise clear line, and the eye follows the flecks up the fan. The gold ones dominate and the dark brown ones anchor them. Every frond is worked by hand, so the outline of the fan and the placement of the flecks belong to the one piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 82cm it suits a long console, a credenza or a reception desk, with clear air on both sides, and nothing should stand within a hand's width of the fronds. It suits being seen from below, so a surface at hip height rather than chest height shows the fan properly. A dark ground behind separates the fronds; a busy one turns them into a tangle. Light from one side and slightly below is what lifts the flecks, and a downlight flattens the whole fan into a single grey shape. The fronds are the reason: each is worked and finished individually, so the work scales with the spread rather than with the height. The fan can be drawn in for a narrower surface, which makes the piece read denser and closer to a conventional rock, or opened further where there is room. The frond count can also be cut back for something bolder and considerably more robust. On the flecks: gold with dark brown is standard, silver with grey and copper with black are both made, and a version with no flecks at all reads as pure line. Packing is the part worth noting: it goes upright in a fitted case with each outer frond sleeved, two people should unpack it, and the fronds will not forgive a knock.
