Near the foot the discs step in by only a little, so the sides rise steeply; toward the top the ledges widen and the dome flattens out under a small cylinder that stands proud at the crown. At 24cm it sits low enough to be seen from above, which is where the concentric steps read best.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eConcentric Ledges Rising to a Raised Crown\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA stepped dome depends on every disc being centred on the one below, since a disc that drifts even slightly off the axis shows at once as a crown sitting to one side. Each disc is cut to its own diameter, and the frost is given to every face and every edge alike, so the whole piece carries one satin surface and no ledge reads glossier than its neighbours. Frosting softens the acrylic without closing it: daylight gathers at each rounded edge, and the dome reads pale and luminous rather than solid white. The crown is finished with the same frost and set at the exact centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSeen from a sofa or an armchair, the dome reads as a series of pale rings, so it belongs where people look down on it, on a coffee table or a sideboard. It is broad rather than tall and wants a clear surface round it, so that the bottom ledge is not crowded by books or a lamp. Against dark timber the frosted rings stand out brightly; on pale stone the piece goes quiet and soft.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eFrost, Tint and the Number of Ledges\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eProduction takes approximately 3–4 weeks for a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. The frosted white can be exchanged for a coloured tint or for a clear finish, and the ledges can be set deeper or more numerous, while the crown can be enlarged or left off for a plain flattened top. Another height can be cut to order. It ships in a fitted crate with its ledges cushioned, and it comes out of the crate lifted from beneath its broad foot, never by the crown.
