The surface is frosted rather than polished, so it is matt to the eye, and the ribs, which follow the curl over the crest and down the tail and pleat across the upright column, read as soft parallel shadows instead of bright lines. The body is opaque enough that the underside of the curl does not show through the front of it. The colour is a steel blue, deepest low in the upright column and paling almost to white at the crest's thin lip.

A Matt Surface Cannot Hide the Form

Frosting a form like this is the harder finish to bring off, and the reason is that it reports the shape honestly. A high polish covers a multitude of things: it fills the surface with reflected light, and the eye reads the highlights rather than the form underneath, so a slightly flat passage in a curve goes unnoticed. A matt surface throws back no highlights, which means what you see is the geometry itself: every hollow, every change of radius, every place where a rib runs out. Here that is the long ribs of the crest, the pleats of the upright column and the point hanging beneath the arch, each read as soft shadow, and the frost runs evenly over all of them, so the colour changes along the ribbon and the texture does not.

This is a substantial horizontal object and it asks to be viewed from one side, which is where the curl reads as a curl. A sideboard, a console, a credenza or a wide shelf all suit it, with the lip pointing out into the space. Unlike a polished piece it does not need a window behind it. A matt surface takes its light evenly from whatever is in the room, so it holds up in a hallway or a north-facing room where a polished piece would go dull, and a hard spotlight on it is the one thing to avoid.

Frosting, Scale and Installation

Bespoke commissions take 5–6 weeks; standard pieces take 3–4. The reach of the curl, the finish and the scale are all specified when the piece is ordered: a version worked to a much tighter curl, or one whose crest reaches far out beyond its tail, both come from this design. The finish is the real choice here: this frosting, or the same form taken to a high polish, which turns it from a study in weight into a study in light. Colour is settled at order, from this steel blue through a clear body to an amber or a graded green. It is carried by the body of the curl, with both hands under the arch and none on the lip. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A matt crest reads as weight where a polished one reads as light, which puts it with organic sculpture; the body is resin sculpture; and a frosted face stays even under indoor sculpture.

Specification

Height

72cm

Width

84cm

Depth

30cm

Material

Frosted Cast Resin
