A cone and a flat disc present the light completely differently: the disc is a constant thickness and reads as one even tone, while the cone's wall is crossed at a shallow angle near the floor and almost square-on near the top, so the same blue would read as two blues unless the cone's wall is worked to compensate. It is thinned as it widens, which holds the tone steady from top to floor. The frost is applied after forming and taken to the same depth on both parts, since a disc frosted more heavily than its base reads as a separate object sitting on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA drum-shaped base with nothing under it means no legs to catch a foot on, which makes this useful in a tight spot: beside a bed, in a small sitting room, at the end of a sofa. At 52cm the disc sits above the seat of most chairs. Frosted blue holds its colour in almost any light rather than depending on what is behind it, which is unusual and makes it easier to place than a clear piece. The disc can be made wider for more overhang or brought in flush with the top of the cone. Frost depth is open: taken lighter the cone shows its wall, taken heavier it reads as a solid. Other colours come from the same stock, and the piece is made colourless too. Height and plan are both cut to order. The table arrives in one piece, since the disc is bonded to the cone before finishing so the joint disappears under the frost, and at this size it is a comfortable one-person lift. It travels sleeved with the disc edge boxed, that rim being the part that takes a knock in a doorway.
