The rim is left rough and chipped rather than turned, so the disc reads as something split rather than machined. It rests on a drum base in gold-finished metal, closely fluted with narrow vertical reeds running the full height, and the drum is narrower than the top so the slab oversails it all the way round.

A Fractured Top on a Fluted Drum

Rough against exact, and the drum is what makes it work. Its upper face is rippled from edge to edge and its rim is broken into chips, as though the slab had been split away from a block of ice. Under it the base is the opposite kind of object: a drum of gold-finished metal, closely fluted with narrow vertical reeds running its full height at a constant pitch, geometrically exact and entirely opaque. The drum is narrower than the top, so the slab oversails it the whole way round and its chipped rim is read against open air rather than against the base. Nothing about the metal tries to look like resin and nothing about the top tries to look machined.

Broad and round, it can anchor a ring of sofas and armchairs, and it works from every approach. The fluted drum picks up every lamp in the room, which is the argument for placing it where light comes from more than one side. The chipped rim wants clearance at walkways. It is extremely heavy and takes four people. Keep it inside.

The Drum, the Rim, and the Wait

From order, a standard piece runs to 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission to 5–6. The fluted drum is the slow part. Three aspects can be specified. The drum is offered in a brushed steel or a dark bronze instead of gold, the top is available tinted, and the fluting pitch can be changed. Name a top diameter and it is made to it. Top diameter and base height are quoted to your own figures. For a matching group, the texture across the top is set once and carried through it. The packing protects the chipped rim of the top; moving it wants four people. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A rippled clear top on a reeded gold drum belongs with our art furniture; the chipped rim against exact gold fluting speaks to our contemporary and modern sculptures, and a slab of such weight stays among our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

42cm

Diameter

130cm

Material

Cast Resin Top on a Fluted Metal Drum
