Flowing locks are carved as ridges and the shadow falls between them; spikes are carved as points and the stone between them is removed entirely, which means each spike stands alone and can break alone. They are therefore cut from the outside in, the outermost first while there is still mass behind them to take the mallet. The white marble is fine enough to hold that edge, which a coarser stone would not.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA crouching lion sits below knee height and reads as coiled rather than commanding, which suits a doorstep, a terrace edge, a stair landing or the foot of a border. It does not want a plinth: raised up, the braced crouch stops making sense. The slab is cut first and the body roughed crouching on it, so the braced forelegs are supported by the block behind them throughout. The mane spikes are separated last of all, working outward to inward. Nothing is pinned - the whole beast including the slab comes from a single block.
