The two humps stand upright and tufted at the crown, a long shaggy ruff is cut in separated locks down the throat and the tail curls along the near haunch. A saddle-cloth lies over the back between the humps, carrying a large circular medallion with a scalloped fringe. It lies on a thin rectangular slab. White marble close to neutral, strong grey veining in fine dark branching lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eConcentric Bands From One Centre\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe medallion on the saddle-cloth is a set of concentric rings - a rosette at the middle, a band of foliate work around it, a scalloped fringe outside that - and concentric ornament is unforgiving in one specific way: the eye checks whether the rings are truly concentric long before it looks at what is carved on them. A band a millimetre off centre reads as a wobble round the whole circumference. So the centre point is established on the cloth first and every ring is struck from it with a trammel, all of them scribed before any is cut, and the ornament is only then worked into bands whose geometry is already fixed. The scalloped fringe is cut last because it is the most exposed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA couchant animal is a low horizontal mass, but this one has a raised head and two upright humps, so it occupies height in a way most couchant pieces do not. At 150cm the raised head comes near chest height though the body lies low. That makes it useful where a standing animal would be too much and a purely low one too little: beside a doorway, at the head of steps, along a terrace, in a courtyard, at a lawn edge. Show the near flank rather than the front, because the saddle-cloth medallion is the finest work on the piece and it sits on the back - and set it where someone passes within a pace or two, since the medallion means nothing at distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Low Body With a High Head\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eSixteen to eighteen weeks. Striking the medallion's concentric bands from one centre precedes any ornament on them. The slab is dressed and the animal roughed lying upon it with the folded legs left as a solid mass and both humps as blocks. The barrel comes down, then the raised head and neck. The throat ruff is cut late as separated locks and deeply undercut. The saddle-cloth is dressed flat, its medallion rings scribed from one centre with a trammel, and the ornament and scalloped fringe cut last. Camel, saddle-cloth and slab are one block, unpinned and unfilled throughout. Some 1,969kg couchant on its slab, craned across onto a poured concrete footing.
