It is polished over every ring and every trough, and there is no surface anywhere on it: this is a sculpture at architectural scale and it is offered as one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eRings Winding Into a Hollow Centre\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEach ring is modelled into the mould and they wind in towards the centre on a true spiral, so the form reads as one movement rather than as a stack of separate rings. The whole outside is polished by hand, from a coarse grade through to a mirror, and so is the inside of the hollow centre, where two people out of three would never look. The rim is worked last and left as a true edge. Every ring holds its pitch round the whole spiral, and a ring that lost it would show from right across a room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts scale calls for a hall, an atrium, a covered courtyard or a generous landing, with space to circle it rather than view it from one side only. The hollow centre is the whole point of it, so nothing should stand in front of the opening, and light from above carries the rings down into the material.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Rings, the Scale, and Getting It On Site\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the workshop a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. Most of it is the ring work. You settle three things. The ring count is drawn to order, the resin is offered tinted rather than clear, and the piece is built at other spans on request. Long axis and overall depth are settled at order. The group is made as one so that the wind of the rings into the centre reads the same on each piece. The packing protects the winding rim and the hollow centre; moving it wants four people.
