Everything is clear acrylic.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Stem Turned as Graduated Spheres and Collars\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTurning acrylic to a baluster profile is a patient job because the material will not tolerate a fast cut: it needs to be taken off in light passes or the surface hazes, and a hazed sphere cannot be brought back to clear without losing its profile. Each sphere and collar is turned in sequence from one blank, which is why the stem has no join between beads, and the graduation is set out beforehand rather than judged at the lathe - a bead even slightly out of sequence reads immediately in a stack this regular. The boss on the top is turned from the same blank as the top itself and is what stops the surface reading as a plain disc when nothing is standing on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA turned pedestal in a colourless material is the piece that lets a traditional profile into a room with nothing else traditional in it. At 80cm the top stands well over a chair arm, so it takes a lamp or a tray of glasses and is no use at all as a coffee table. A hall, a bedroom or the gap between two chairs will all take it. The stem is what you are buying, so keep the table out where the beads are visible from the floor up, and give it a firm floor under the foot rather than a thick carpet.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eSphere Count, Top Boss and Standing It Level\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eFigure the difference between standard and bespoke at 3–4 weeks against 5–6. Sphere count is set at order and takes the stem from three heavy beads to a dozen fine ones. The top boss can be turned up higher, flattened away, or replaced with a moulded rim, and the foot is offered stepped, domed or as a plain disc. A tint through the whole table is available in a smoke, an amber or a blue. Size and height are made to order, and two tables ordered together are turned as one lot so their beads match. It travels in two parts, top and stem, in one fitted crate; both are one-person carries and they go together with a single central fixing.
