clear-shell-and-oak-leg-acrylic-dining-chair-83cm
Clear Shell & Oak Leg Acrylic Dining Chair - 83cm

Description

Back and seat on this dining chair are a single clear acrylic shell bent in one continuous movement, beginning at the crest and finishing at the seat's leading edge, with a soft radius all round its bottom edge. Four legs in solid oak socket into the underside and taper as they descend, splaying slightly outward. Nothing else is added: two materials and one joint each.

One Shell Meeting Four Solid Oak Legs

Two materials that behave nothing alike have to meet at four points and stay met. Timber moves with the seasons and cast acrylic does not, so each socket is bored to take that difference without loading the shell, and the shoulder of every leg is turned to sit against the underside over its whole face rather than at a rim. The oak is left with an open grain under a clear finish, so the timber reads as timber against a body that reads as nothing at all. On a colourless shell the four sockets are the only visible interruption from above, which is why they are set in from the edge and finished to the same clarity as the rest. Every chair takes its own four legs and they are matched for figure before fitting.

A clear shell over pale timber legs reads as a light chair, which makes it useful round a table that is already substantial: a stone top, a heavy timber plank, a dark slab. It suits a dining room and works as a desk chair. Set it on a floor worth seeing, because the shell shows whatever is beneath it and the legs draw four lines down into it. Four round a table read as one object rather than four. Avoid a deep pile: the legs are narrow at the foot and want a firm bearing.

Timber Choice, Seat Height and a Set at One Order

Give it 3–4 weeks as a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks as a bespoke commission. Timber is chosen from a range, and a darker stain or a limed finish is available where oak is too warm. The shell can be tinted or frosted, and the leg splay can be opened or drawn in. Seat height is set to your table, which is worth confirming before anything is bored. Chairs arrive with the legs fitted and are a one-person lift. Where a set is ordered the timber is cut from one board so the four match, and they ship in a single crate with the shells sleeved individually, since a clear shell shows a scuff from any angle and stacked chairs mark one another. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

One clear shell meeting four oak legs belongs with our acrylic sculptures; a light chair for a heavy table leads to our art furniture, and a desk chair with a Nordic line joins our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

83cm

Width

51cm

Depth

48.8cm

Material

Clear Cast Acrylic with Solid Oak Legs
