It is colourless, and the ribs catch the light in bright lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Ribbed Sheet Rolling Over Into a Crest\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA piece of this size is read by its outline and by its surface, and the ribs are what join the two. They run in close parallel lines that follow the sheet as it bends, so the curve can be read from the pattern alone, the lines tightening where the sheet turns hardest and opening out across the broad wall. Colourless resin at this scale would read as a blank without them; with them every movement of the form is drawn in light. The crest is hooked firmly over rather than just tipped, which gives the piece a direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is a floor piece for a large room, an entrance hall, a hotel lobby or a gallery, and it needs space to be walked round, since the crest and the wall present quite different faces. A dark background shows the ribs best, and low side light from a window or a lamp turns every rib into a line of brightness. The resin can be tinted a pale green, a blue or an amber, the ribs combed finer or left broader, and the whole piece scaled to the room it is for. A tint makes the ribs read as bands of colour rather than as light. It is crated to measure for the journey, and it takes lifting gear and several people to bring it indoors and stand it in its final place.
