The hip and the far shoulder carry it, and both are ground on one plane so the piece sits without rocking while still reading as though it were lifted at one end. Long shallow planes are harder to keep true than short steep ones, because any wander in a face shows along its whole length; each is flatted against a reference and then polished in one direction.
