The stone beneath it is black marble, and it comes with the piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eShadows Inside a Material That Has None\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003ePiercing a clear body from both faces is the only way to put a shadow inside a material that has none of its own. The black lies at a depth and not on a surface, which is why the drifts move as you do: what you are looking at sits some way inside the piece, and the openings give the eye two routes to it instead of one. Black caught inside a clear body means the drifts are read through the material, and the openings let you see them from two faces at once. Polished all over, inside the piercings as well, and those interiors take more time than the whole outside does.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt belongs at about eye height when seated: a console, a low shelf, the top of a cabinet. A pale ground behind it is what makes the black register as drift rather than as dirt. This one wants light behind it; a lamp in front of it flattens the drifts into marks. The outline reads from across a room and the interior only opens at the hand's distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eOpening It Further, and Two People to Move It\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt takes 3–4 weeks to make as standard, and 5–6 weeks to make bespoke. The number of openings can be changed, the black can be left out for a wholly colourless body, and the stone can be exchanged for a pale one. Change the opening count and the plan is redrawn to suit, since a rock with fewer holes needs more width to keep the same weightlessness. Both parts ride in one crate and are taken out in that order: the marble to its place, then the rock down onto it. Two people, and the openings are not handles.
