Because the piercing goes all the way through, whatever is behind the chair is part of what you see of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Shell Pierced Right Through With Loops\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery loop in the lattice is modelled before the mould is taken and the shell is cast with all of them open, which is what makes this a long build: the material has to run round a hundred small voids without a break, and each void then has to be polished through its whole depth from both sides. Nothing is drilled and nothing is cut out afterwards. The legs are made separately and set into the underside of the dish, and the joint is worked back until it does not read.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 80cm it sits at dining-chair height and serves as a dining or an occasional chair, and the lattice needs a view beyond it: set against a pattern or a lit window it opens up, while in a dim corner it closes into what looks like a solid dish, so a busy wallpaper or a garden door behind it does it more good than a plain wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Lattice, the Legs, and Why It Is a Long Build\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery standard piece is made in 3–4 weeks, and every bespoke commission in 5–6. The pierced lattice sets the pace here. Three aspects can be specified. The loop pattern is drawn to order, the shell can be supplied tinted, and the legs can be made in another material where a heavier base is wanted. The seat height and the back height follow your figures. Several ordered together are worked so that the pattern of the loops in the lattice agrees. The packing is designed round the pierced shell and the four leg ends; allow two people on arrival.
