It stands on a stainless steel drum polished to a mirror and finely fluted the whole way round, and the drum returns the room in vertical strips.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Field of Pebbles Over the Whole Face\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery pebble is modelled into the upper mould face, and they are set at different sizes across the plan so the field reads as disturbance rather than as a pattern. The underside is left plane, which is what lets a disc of this diameter bed evenly on a drum. The drum is fluted the whole way round at an even pitch and then polished to a mirror, and a mirror finish over flutes is the slow part, because every flute has to be brought up on its own without softening the arris beside it. The drum top is faced flat across its full diameter before the disc is set on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRound and low, it is made for the middle of a room and has no front. The polished drum returns the floor and whatever stands near it, which means what surrounds the table becomes part of it. The pebbled face is read from above rather than from the side, so it suits a seating arrangement people look down into rather than a hall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Pebbling, the Fluted Drum, and Setting It Level\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom order, a standard piece runs to 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission to 5–6. Most of it is the pebble field. Three of its features are open. The pebbling can be worked at any density, the resin can be tinted, and the drum can be finished brushed rather than mirror polished.
