Colourless everywhere, with the needle bursts the palest thing on it because each is hundreds of separate points. The root is worked in deep ridges, like bark. Nothing comes underneath; the worked root is cut level and takes the whole tree.

Branches Drawn for Reach Instead of Load

Needles change that calculation completely - a burst weighs almost nothing and there are hundreds of them, so the branches here are drawn for reach rather than for load. That is why this one can lean as far as it does: there is almost nothing above the branch to bring it down, and the root only has to answer the reach. A needle in a clear body returns its own edge and nothing else, which is why hundreds of them together go pale rather than dark. Every branch is polished and the needle tips left crisp rather than eased.

It needs a hall floor or a wide landing, with room around the spread. A dark wall behind it, or the bursts have no outline to speak of. Side light finds every needle at once; flat light returns grey. Across a room it is one pale cloud; the bursts separate into needles at about two paces.

Bringing the Spread In, and a Pallet

As standard the build runs 3–4 weeks, and as a bespoke commission 5–6. Say the word and the spread is brought in, the bursts are counted differently, or the root is worked deeper. Bring the spread in and the bursts are re-spaced along the branches, since each keeps the clearance it needs from the next. Palleted in one crate, and the spread sets the case rather than the height. Four people, because everything on it is fine and none of it is strong. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A clear pine with bursts of needles along every branch belongs to our organic sculptures; its colourless needles join our resin sculptures, and a wide landing clear around the spread gives it space among our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

100cm

Width

125cm

Depth

42cm

Material

Clear Cast Resin, Needle-Drawn
