Its head is a dragon's - short muzzle, deep brows, the mouth closed - and above and behind it a heavy mane of curls covers the back of the neck and falls onto the shoulders, so from behind the neck reads as mane and nothing else. The tail curls up behind the haunch. It is clear right through and polished on every face.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Mane Heavy Enough to Hide the Neck\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA mane that covers the neck entirely has to do the neck's job as well as its own: the head is carried on it, so the curls at the back are cut shallower and left thicker than the ones at the front, where they can be undercut freely. In a clear material this is visible - the front curls throw shadows and the back ones read as mass - and the effect is deliberate, because a mane undercut evenly all round looks like a wig. The forward foreleg is the other decision. It puts the animal slightly off symmetry, so the shoulders are set out from the standing leg rather than from the centre line, and the head is then squared to the room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwenty-seven centimetres suits a shelf, a desk, a hall chest or a cabinet top, and the forward foreleg means it has a direction: turn it a few degrees off square so the step reads. Light from the front or side keeps the curls separate and the shadows in them; from directly above the mane closes into one mass and the head disappears into it. Stood on something dark it becomes an outline with light caught in the mane.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Fourth Beast, the Colour and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the workshop a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. It completes a set of four, no two the same animal, and the other three match it closely enough to stand together whenever they are bought. A smoke body, a green or an amber are all made, as well as this clear one, with gold or silver leaf inside the resin on request. A base is made for it where a plinth is wanted, and the mane can be cut back for a lighter head. It arrives boxed with the mane and the tail protected; take it under the haunches rather than by the head.
