A hooped back rises to a wavy crest at its centre and holds a broad central splat, then runs down into two arms that sweep forward and curl over at their tips, above a seat rippled like disturbed water. It stands on four tapering legs whose surface is irregular and faceted the whole way down, so the eye reads the form itself and whatever shows through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Chair Read Entirely as Standing Water\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eClarity is the hardest thing to hold at this size. The splat at the back is thin and the four legs are solid, and colourless resin hides nothing, so a haze or a seed of air in a thick leg would show at once against the clear arms. The legs are where any fault would be seen first. The hoop, the splat and the arms are formed together and no joint shows between them. The seat ripple is modelled into the mould, and the faceted legs are worked back by hand afterwards so the facets catch light at different angles down each leg. Nothing on the chair is painted or coated.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 80cm to the top of the hoop this pulls up to a dining table like any other chair, and a set of them reads as a row of hoops from across a room. Being colourless it takes most of its reading from what is behind it, so a patterned rug shows through the seat and a dark floor leaves only the bright edges of the facets.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Tint to Order, the Seat Ripple and the Arms\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhere the piece is standard the build is 3–4 weeks, and where it is bespoke 5–6. The hooped back is the slow part. Three elements are left to you. The resin can be given a tint of your choice, the seat ripple can be cut more boldly or eased almost flat, and the arms can be drawn in or opened out. Both the seat height and the back height are yours to set. For a matching group, the depth of the ripple in the seat is set once and carried through it. The packing protects the hoop of the back and the four leg ends; moving it wants two people.
