The face is polished until it is glassy, so a cup or a book slides onto it without catching. Around it the bark is left rough and deeply furrowed, and its creases scatter the light, so the side reads frosted against the clear top. The edge where the polish meets the bark is kept crisp, and that line is what makes the top read as a clean saw cut through the log.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWith its wide top close to the floor, it works as a seat at the end of a bed or beside a fire, and just as well as a small table in front of a chair, where it holds a tray and a glass together. The rough bark side shrugs off a knock from a foot or a chair leg, and on a dark floor the frosted flanks glow while the rings on top stay crisp.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eRing Spacing, the Bark and the Crate\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eAs standard the build runs 3–4 weeks, and as a bespoke commission 5–6. The barked side takes the longest to work. Three things are open: the bark can be roughened further or softened, the growth rings can be set wider apart or closer together, and the cut face can be left with a satin finish instead of a gloss. Name the top's diameter and the stool's height, and it is made to them. Stools ordered at the same time are matched for the spacing of the rings. It is packed with the cut face and the bark rim held clear of the crate walls, and two people carry it.
