Reduce a coarse broken surface onto a piece this small and it stops reading as a surface at all: from arm's length it becomes an even grey, and the object looks as though someone forgot to polish it. The skin here is therefore drawn coarser in relation to the piece than it would be on anything bigger, with individual bubbles large enough to be seen one at a time from across a desk. The clear band up the middle of each face exists for the same reason, giving the eye one smooth passage so the rough parts have something to be rough against.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 18cm it is a desk object and it is meant to be picked up, so a shelf above eye level or a table across a room both waste it. The gold needs light close by and direct, since flake this fine only fires when something strikes it; a lamp on the same surface does more than a bright window. It is narrow front to back and will tip if it is knocked, so somewhere it is not reached across is worth choosing. The skin is drawn coarser or partly smoothed, the leaf is torn coarser or run sparser, and the body is tinted through. A polished version is made and is a small clear object with gold in it, which is a different idea rather than the same one finished differently. It is also cast at other sizes, where the texture argument reverses. It is sent in one small box in a shaped bed holding it upright, and one hand lifts it.
