The broken shoulder is cut, not moulded: a break formed in a tool repeats identically on every casting and reads as a decoration, while a cut one is different each time, which is the whole point of a fragment. The gold leaf is set against the mould wall so it stays in the chest instead of sinking into the legs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a piece for close looking rather than a room-scale one: a shelf, a desk, a stack of books, a windowsill. The raised arm gives it a direction, so it is worth turning until the arm points into the room rather than at a wall. Side light is what makes the leaf work; light from the front flattens the planes and buries the gold in reflections. Where a group is ordered together the castings are poured in one batch, which is what keeps the leaf reading as one family rather than as a set of separate decisions.
