The block is square in plan with a plain top, and the lion takes up the greater part of the height.

A Gold-Flecked Lion on a Block of the Same Resin

Lion and block meet on a flat seat the width of the block, and the surfaces either side of that line share one polish, so nothing marks where one stops. The leaf is set denser in the lion than in the block, so the eye goes to the animal first and the block reads as its ground. The mane and the collar are small enough to be cut with fine tools, and the whole piece is polished rather than frosted, so the gold glints through every face. No two pieces carry the same scatter of flakes.

A tall narrow piece wants height under it as little as possible, so this is a shelf, a console or a mantelpiece object rather than something for a plinth. A plain surface behind it gives the gold nothing to compete with, and it works well as one of a small run of pieces along a single shelf. Set it where it meets a standing visitor's eye, so the face and the mane read before the block.

Block Proportion, Leaf and Placing the Piece

Give it 3–4 weeks as a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks as a bespoke commission. The block can be made deeper or broader, or turned round instead of square. Leaf can be kept to the lion alone, left out of the whole piece, or replaced by silver or copper. Tints of amber, grey and green are offered through either part. This is one piece rather than a pair, and its mirror image can be cut to order. Sizes are cut to order. It ships as one item, sleeved in an upright crate, and needs only one person to lift. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A guardian lion on a block of its own resin belongs with our lion statues; a front-facing seated pose leads to our figurative sculptures, and gold flecks right through a clear casting join our resin sculptures.

Specification

Height

41cm

Width

14cm

Depth

14cm

Material

Optically Clear Cast Resin with Gold Leaf
