At this length the leaf is close enough together that the eye reads it as one field rather than as separate pieces, which is what makes the shaft look filled instead of scattered. The steel at each end is cut thicker than the resin walls, and that proportion is why the column reads as a clear body between two solids rather than as a case with something inside it. The resin is polished on every face and the steel left brushed, so the two never return the same light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt suits a hall or the corner of a room, set where light can reach it from behind. Give it a dark wall at its back, or the gold reads as glare instead of as leaf. Lit from behind, the gold leaf lifts off the body and floats; lit from in front, it lies flat on the face. The amount of gold can be changed, another leaf can be used, and the steel can be finished bright instead of brushed. Change the amount of gold and the spacing goes with it, because the leaf reads as suspended only while it is scattered through the depth rather than gathered onto one plane.
