In the middle it makes a symmetrical object and the ridge becomes two matching wings. At either end it reads as a bookend with a long tail. Just short of the middle, which is where it is, the ridge is divided into two unequal runs, and unequal is what stops the eye settling. It is a decision taken on the pattern before anything is modelled, because it cannot be changed afterwards without redrawing both halves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA long run and barely a hand of depth means a long narrow surface: a console, a credenza, the back of a sideboard. The spire is the tallest thing on it by a long way and is the part that gets caught, so it wants clear air above rather than a shelf close over it. A light raking along the length finds the flake, and one square to the front leaves the ridge flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWhere the Spire Stands, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhether it is standard or bespoke sets the build: 3–4 weeks or 5–6. One spire breaks an otherwise low ridge, and where it stands along the length decides what the piece is. The spire is moved along the length at order, a second is added, and a tint is carried through the body. Putting it in the middle makes a symmetrical object, which suits a position seen square on and loses the division the piece was drawn for. It is crated to its full length with the spire sleeved on its own, and two carry it.
