The upper third reads a little darker than the rest, and it stands on its own foot with no base supplied.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eEverything It Has Is Cut Into the Surface\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWith nothing suspended in the material and nothing applied to it, everything this piece has is cut into the face - and on a frosted surface a cut behaves differently from the way it does on a polished one. Polished, a channel is a bright line, because it reflects. Frosted, it is a dark line, because it scatters less than the flat around it. So the channels here are cut shallower than they would be on a clear casting and spaced further apart, and the piece is checked under a single raking light, which is the only condition in which too deep and too shallow look different.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA frosted piece with no colour in it needs light from behind or from the side and is nearly featureless under anything else. A shelf beside a window or a console with a lamp to one side gives it what it needs; a room lit only from the ceiling gives it none and the channels vanish. It is worth moving until the light is right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eChannel Depth, a Tint, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe standard build is 3–4 weeks and the bespoke build 5–6. Nothing is in the material and nothing is on it, so every line the piece has was put there with a tool. The channels are cut deeper, the whole face is polished instead, and the material takes a tint. Polishing it reverses every line from dark to bright and makes a quite different object of the same form. It arrives in a lined box with nothing pressed against the frosted face, and it is taken out by the foot with both hands.
