Real ice is matt where the air has got at it and clear a few millimetres in, and the eye knows the difference without being able to say what it is looking at. A piece frosted right through would be a pale object; a piece polished all over would be a transparent one. This is neither, and the depth of the treatment, the thinnest of skins, is what puts it in the right category.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe contrast needs to be close to be seen at all, so it belongs where people pass within reach of it and not across a room. A hall table, a desk or a shelf at eye height all do that. Light from the side skims the frosted face and lets the clear body show beneath it; light from directly in front flattens the two together and the piece becomes uniformly pale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eHow Far the Frosting Goes, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eBuild times separate standard from bespoke: 3–4 weeks against 5–6. What happens at the face and what sits behind it are one decision, not two. The treatment is taken over the whole piece or removed entirely, the leaf is thinned, and the part beneath takes a tint of its own. Carried right through, the piece becomes pale and solid; taken off, it becomes glass. Neither is what this was drawn to be. It travels in one padded box with the frosted face never in contact with the packing, and it is lifted out by the foot.
