A rough, crackled band twists diagonally round its middle, like a fault running through ice, and above and below it the resin is smooth and clear, so the band reads as a break in something whole. It is a sculptural piece in the form of a vase.

A Clear Vase Form With a Fractured Band

The piece plays one texture against another. Most of the surface is smooth and glassy, so the form is read through it and the room is seen bent in its walls; the band is rough and crystalline, catching the light in points, and it winds round the vase like a crack that has frozen. Placing the band at an angle rather than level gives the whole form a twist. The flared rim is notched, which keeps the top from looking machined. No two bands are quite alike.

At 40cm it stands well on a bookshelf, a console or a writing desk, whether in a sitting room or a study. Light from behind or from a window beside it brings the fractured band to life, and a dark background makes the clear walls glow. It looks good alone or with other clear pieces, and a pair makes a quiet, formal arrangement.

Tint, the Band and a Small Carton

Most pieces are standard and take 3–4 weeks; a bespoke commission takes 5–6. It can be tinted, a pale blue, an amber or a smoke, and the band can be made wider, finer or doubled round the form. A tint gathers in the thick walls and deepens the colour at the base. A pair of the vase forms, one clear and one tinted, makes a good contrast on a shelf. It is shipped in a small padded carton, and taking it out and placing it is the work of a moment. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A vase form split by a frozen fault belongs with our organic sculptures; clear resin smooth on either side of its crackled seam leads to our resin sculptures, and a quiet vessel for a study bookcase joins our contemporary and modern sculptures.

Specification

Height

40cm

Width

23cm

Depth

23cm

Material

Cast Clear Resin
