clear-combed-panel-bench-on-a-metal-trestle-180cm
Clear Combed Panel Bench on a Metal Trestle - 180cm

Description

On this bench the seat is one thick clear panel, its face combed into fine feathered lines that cross from the front edge to the back rather than following the length, so the face brightens and dims as you walk past it. The frame under it is slim polished metal, its two legs standing upright and tied by a rail just under the seat, and the panel reaches out past it at both ends.

Fine Feathered Lines Combed Across the Width

Combing across the width is the harder direction, because each line has to start and finish at a polished edge and any overrun shows as a nick on the arris where a line running lengthwise would simply end in the middle of the panel. The comb is taken across in one pass per line and the lines are not evenly spaced: the feathering comes from grouping them, close in places and open in others, which is set out before the work starts rather than judged as it goes. The trestle is deliberately slim, since a heavy frame under a clear panel reads as the object and the panel becomes a lid. Its rail is structural rather than decorative and is what keeps the frame square.

At this length the bench takes two people or one person and everything they are carrying, which makes it an entrance piece as much as a seat. The combing reads from the side, so a position you walk along does more for it than one you approach head on. Against a dark wall the lines go bright; against a pale one they read as a grey haze. Leave both ends clear of a corner so the panel can be seen to be one piece.

Comb Pitch, Trestle Finish and Getting It Through a Door

From order, a standard piece runs to 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission to 5–6. Comb pitch and grouping are set at order, and the panel is offered plain or combed along the length instead of across it. Panel thickness is open. The trestle comes in this polished finish, a brushed one, a brass plate or powder-coated black, and its rail height is set at order. Both the length and the height of the seat are settled when the bench is ordered. Panel and trestle travel apart, the panel on edge in a crate, and it is a three-person lift onto the trestle. Both parts go through a standard doorway, which is worth checking before a longer panel is ordered. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Feathered lines combed across the width belong with our acrylic sculptures; a slim polished frame and its rail lead to our metal sculptures, and an entrance bench for bags and coats joins our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

45cm

Width

180cm

Depth

38cm

Material

Feather-Combed Clear Acrylic with Polished Metal
