Its depth is slight, and it stands on the black marble supplied with it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eInk Drawn to Find the Opening\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA hole through a colourless casting is a strange thing to look at, because from most angles there is nothing to tell you it is there. Clear material in front of the opening and clear material behind it are the same brightness, so the arch appears and disappears as you move. The ink is what settles it. Drawn through the arms that frame the arch and on up into both of the tall peaks, it gives the eye an edge to follow, so the opening holds its shape from every side instead of closing up whenever the light flattens the clear body.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts shallow depth means it can go on a narrow shelf where a deeper object could not. What it needs is to be lit from beyond rather than in front, and a wall at its back is worth less to it than a window or a lamp standing past it. Against a dark wall the ink disappears into the background and the arch closes up. Allow it its full width and keep the line of sight through the opening clear.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Ink, the Cut, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery standard piece is made in 3–4 weeks, and every bespoke commission in 5–6. The ink is run heavier or lighter and taken toward black, the arch is cut wider, and the sweep beneath is left off. A frosted body is offered and changes the argument entirely, since frosting makes the opening obvious without any ink at all. The ink can give way to a tint through the whole body, which makes a darker and more solid piece. It goes out in one box, the arch bridged inside so nothing bears on it and the marble laid flat below, and one person can carry it.
