Colourless from the foot to every tip, with the rough surface doing all of the work. A small black block travels with it. Each arm is worked rough along its whole length, so no two catch the light in the same way.

Every Arm Given an Edge to Be Found By

In a body with no colour, one arm is separated from another only by its own edge, and a polished surface would give the whole form one continuous highlight instead. Roughening every face is what breaks that up: each arm then carries its own line of light and stops where the next begins. A branching form in an uncoloured body has nothing to separate one arm from another but its own edges, and roughening the whole of it is what gives every arm an edge to be found by. Rough over the entire form, arms and trunk alike, with nothing polished.

Put it on a desk or a bookshelf, close enough for the arms to be followed. Give it a dark ground, or a colourless form against a pale wall keeps almost no outline. Side light from either hand; the arms cast across one another and that is what shows the depth. From across the room it is one shape, and the branching only separates at a pace or so.

Longer Arms, Another Angle, and a Small Crate

In the workshop a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. We will draw the arms longer, set the branching at another angle, or cut the block in another stone. Draw an arm further out and the trunk thickens under it, since what hangs past the foot has to be held. How far the arms reach is settled before casting. A small crate, and it is standing within a minute of arriving. One person can lift it; take the block and not an arm. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A clear branching form worked rough on every arm belongs to our organic sculptures; the uncoloured casting sits among our resin sculptures, and it wants a near view, as do many of our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

48cm

Width

38cm

Depth

15cm

Base

20 x 19 x 7cm

Material

Clear Cast Resin, Roughened Overall
