A clear blue fills the whole body and doubles in depth wherever one fold lies over another. A black marble plinth is supplied, and it makes up a good part of the height.

A Long Thing Made Tall

A folded ribbon is a way of making a tall thing out of a long one, and every fold is a decision about how much height it costs. No two folds sit at the same angle, so the profile changes wherever you stand and the column never settles into a repeating pattern however long you look at it. Every fold is a change of section, and a material that sets unevenly would show a line at each one. Polished on all faces, including the returns inside the folds.

A hall, an atrium or a stairwell will take it. It rises far over a standing visitor, and the room has to allow for it. A plain ground, because the blue reads through and takes up whatever is behind it. Daylight from one side makes every fold a different blue; flat light makes them one. The zigzag reads from across a hall, which is unusual for a body with no opacity in it anywhere.

More Folds or Fewer, and Getting It In

It takes 3–4 weeks to make as standard, and 5–6 weeks to make bespoke. More folds are set or fewer, the blue is taken toward teal, and the plinth is cut down. Set more folds and each one is made shallower, since the ribbon is one length however often it turns. It travels upright on a pallet in two parts, and the plinth is set down and levelled before the column goes onto it. Two people and a route measured beforehand, because at full height it will not turn a corner upright. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A blue ribbon folded back on itself up a column is part of our organic sculptures; the folded blue casting sits with our resin sculptures, and more for a stairwell or an atrium is in our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

152.7cm

Width

62cm

Depth

35cm

Base

46 x 46 x 63cm

Material

Cast Blue Resin on Natural Marble
