It comes with a black block, which is not fixed to the casting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Thin Wall Round a Broad Mass\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA mass this broad has to be hollow to stay within two people's lift, and on this one the wall is kept thick enough to hold every billow crisp. Billows read as billows only if the hollows between them go deep enough to hold shadow, and on a colourless body that shadow is the only thing separating one from the next. A thin wall is what lets a mass this broad stay light enough to lift, because the material is worked to a thickness rather than filled to a volume. Polished over every billow, and the stem is polished too so the darkening reads as colour rather than as a change of surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt suits a broad console or a hall stand, because the width and the depth both need room and the height does not. It needs something dark at its back, or colourless billows have no edge at all. Light from above pours into the billows and finds every hollow between them; light from below only lights the stem. The mass carries across a room as a pale cloud, and the separate billows resolve at about two paces.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eChanging the Billow Count, and One Crate\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA standard piece takes 3–4 weeks to make, and a bespoke commission 5–6. The billow count can be changed, the darkening can be taken out of the stem, and stone can replace the block. Take the darkening out of the stem and the mass loses its footing, because the dark is what tells the eye where the object meets its base. One crate holds both, the block underneath, and no tool is needed to marry them. Two people. It is wide and it is the width rather than the weight that makes it a two-person lift.
