Two supports are supplied: a long black marble block, and under it a gilt plate set back from its edges.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eGold Leaf Held Inside a Thin Plate\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eSuspending leaf in a body works only within a narrow range of thickness: too little and the gold lies flat against one face, too much and it is lost in the middle. The plate's depth is enough for the flakes to sit at different levels and to be seen doing it from either side. A body of this thickness is why the leaf reads as suspended: there is just enough depth for the gold to sit at different levels and none for it to hide in. Polished on both faces and around the whole cut outline, with the gilt plate bright beneath it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA desk or a bookshelf, positioned so that something can light it from behind. Behind it, something dark. Gold against a bright wall stops being gold. Backlight puts the leaf into the air; front light lays it down on the surface.
