White marble threaded with fine branching grey veins across shoulder, barrel and slab.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eHorns Set Out Before Anything Is Roughed\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn almost every animal here the head is the last thing brought to its finish, because it is the part everyone looks at and the carver wants the most practice on the block before reaching it. A bull with levelled horns inverts that. The horns reach further forward than any other part of the piece, which means they define the very front face of the block - and if they are set out after the body is roughed, the body will already have been cut back past where they need to start. So the horn tips are marked on the raw face first, before a single pass is taken anywhere, and everything else is worked back from them. The horns themselves stay as thick tapered masses until the end, then come down to section in short passes, alternating between the two so the head never carries one finished horn and one heavy one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe whole composition points forward: head down, horns level, one foreleg off the slab. It reads as arrested movement, and movement needs somewhere to go. Set it against a wall or into the back of a border and the pose becomes a collision. At 180cm the horns are around chest height, which is close enough to feel intended. Give it depth ahead - a lawn it appears to be crossing, a courtyard, the length of a drive - and put the viewer at three-quarters to the front rather than square, which is where the shoulder folds and the dewlap read together. The fine branching veining is legible close to and vanishes at distance, so a position people walk past beats one they only ever see from a window.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Charge Needs Space in Front of It\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwenty to twenty-two weeks. Setting out the horns on the block face precedes any roughing, because they reach further forward than anything else. The slab is dressed and squared, the animal roughed standing upon it with all four legs left as columns. The barrel and the heavy shoulder come down next, the neck folds and the dewlap cut once the mass beneath them is settled. The lifted foreleg is freed late and the curled tail later still, both being thin stone standing clear. The horns are brought to section last, in alternating passes. The bull takes no pin and no filler, and its slab comes from the very same block. Some 3,403kg as a single block, craned into place upon a poured concrete footing.
