The top is a thick timber slab, squared on all four edges and finished to show the grain running the full length. What makes the table is the asymmetry beneath it: one end stands on a solid timber block the same width as the slab, and the other on a panel of clear acrylic. From across a room only the timber end reads as a support at all.

Timber at One End, Nothing Visible at the Other

Pairing timber with clear acrylic sets up a problem neither material has on its own. Timber moves with the seasons and acrylic does not, so the fixing at the clear end cannot be rigid or the slab will work against it and the panel will show a stress mark where it meets the underside. The acrylic panel is therefore held in a channel that lets the slab breathe along its length while holding it square across it. The panel's own edges are brought up to full clarity on all four sides, because an edge is the only part of clear acrylic anyone actually sees and a dull one beside figured timber looks like grey plastic. The timber block at the other end is cut from the same board as the top wherever the board allows, so the grain carries down into it.

A table this long seats ten and needs a room with plenty of space on either side. Set it so the clear end faces the way people come in - approached from that side the top appears to float, and approached from the timber side it reads as an ordinary trestle. Its depth leaves room for serving down the middle. It suits a room with a hard floor better than a thick carpet, since a carpet takes the clear panel's bottom edge out of sight and the illusion depends on seeing it.

The Timber, the Clear Panel, and Delivery

Order a standard piece and it takes 3–4 weeks; order it bespoke and it takes 5–6. The timber is specified with the order and the grain is matched across the top and the block before anything is cut. The clear panel can be made in a smoked or tinted acrylic if a fully invisible support is too stark, and it can be repeated at both ends for a table that appears to float on both sides. The slab is a lift for two people at least and will not turn on a half-landing, so measure the route before ordering. The top, the block and the panel arrive as three pieces and bolt together from beneath in one operation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Timber at one end and clear acrylic at the other belongs with our acrylic sculptures; a slab that floats on one side leads to our organic sculptures, and a table for ten in a hard-floored room joins our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

75cm

Width

280cm

Depth

85cm

Material

Solid Timber with Clear Cast Acrylic
