Below, a dark base of curved tapering legs swells and merges as it drops to the floor.

A Granular Field Inside a Teal Rim

The field and the rim are cast against one another so nothing shows where they meet, and the rim carries its teal most strongly at the deepest part of its section. The saddle is worked in both mould faces, which is what lets the seat dip in the middle and rise at the ends without the section thinning at the dip. The base is worked in fibreglass to a matt finish so it takes nothing from the seat above it, and its bearing faces are levelled together before the seat is set on.

The seat comes at an easy height for an adult, and the saddle holds a sitter in place rather than letting them slide. The field is read from standing height and the rim from seated, so the piece changes as it is approached. The dark base disappears against a dark floor, which leaves the seat looking unsupported; on a pale floor the legs read as drawn lines.

The Field, the Rim, and Ordering a Set

Plan for 3–4 weeks on a standard piece and 5–6 weeks on a bespoke commission. Most of it is the saddled seat. There are three open questions. The field colour is yours to name, the rim is offered in another tint, and the leg count can go to four. The saddle is cut to a sitter rather than to a shape, so the dip and the rise are set from the seat height you give. Tell us the seat span and the seat height. Batched together, the pieces are made so the spread of the field corresponds. The seat rim and the three leg tips are wrapped first, and one person can move it with a hand under the seat. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A granular brown saddle in a teal rim gives our art furniture a stool; the swelling dark legs suit our organic sculptures, the seat our resin sculptures.

Specification

Height

50cm

Width

55cm

Depth

50cm

Material

Cast Resin Seat on a Fibreglass Base
