The body is a long wedge, the neck rises from it as a second wedge, and the head is a third with no ears, no eyes and no muzzle cut into it at all. The resin is a smoky brown that darkens where two planes meet and clears where the material thins.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Head Left as a Plain Wedge\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eAn animal with no features has to be right in its proportions, because there is nothing else to look at. The angle of the neck against the body and the tilt of the head are the only things carrying the pose, and both are set within a degree or two: a head a fraction high reads as alert and a fraction low as asleep, and either can be right but the piece has to choose. The planes themselves are cut large and few, which is less forgiving than many small ones, since each has to be dead flat over its whole span and the edges between them dead straight. The smoke in the resin helps: it holds a highlight along every edge and makes the geometry legible from across a room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt fifteen centimetres it fits in one hand, and turning it is worth doing: the silhouette changes completely from one side to the other. It sits well beside books, on a hall table with keys, or on a windowsill where the smoke catches the light. It needs a light off to one side, not above: that way each plane takes a value of its own and the faceting reads, while a flat light merges them into one brown shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Smoke, the Planes and What Arrives\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOrdinarily a standard piece needs 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. Colour is settled at order in this smoke, in an amber, in a green, in a clear body or in an opaque finish where a solid colour is wanted. The faceting can be cut coarser for a blockier animal or finer for a smoother one, and the head can be given a cut ear and eye where something more legible is wanted. Sizes go up from this one to a floor piece. It arrives boxed with the corners protected and nothing to assemble; the edges are the vulnerable part, so take it by the flat of the body rather than by the head or the tail.
