The lion is cast: modelled in wax, invested, burned out and poured, so every lock of the mane exists first as something soft and is fixed by heat rather than won by removal. The plinth is the reverse - stone taken away until the panels are left standing. The patina is then worked onto the bronze by hand with heat and chemicals, which is why the highlights sit on the mane and spine where a hand would naturally rub.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBronze on marble suits an entrance where it will be seen close: a portico, a hall, a stair head, a courtyard against pale render. Bronze weathers to a deeper brown outdoors and keeps its patina longest under cover, so a sheltered position holds the finish you buy. The marble plinth lifts the figure to chest height, which is where a cast surface reads best.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTwo Trades in One Piece\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eSixteen weeks, and the two elements run in parallel rather than in sequence because they are made in different workshops. The plinth is cut, its panels recessed and its faces polished while the lion is modelled and cast, and the two only meet at the end for the cap slab to be bedded between them.
