A rippled blue dish is a shape at any size: without something recognisable on it the eye has no way to decide whether it is looking at a saucer or at a lake, and the ripples read as a pattern. Put a boat on the water and both questions are answered at once: the dish becomes a stretch of sea, the texture becomes weather, and the smooth pool beside the boat reads as calm water just ahead of it.
