Partway up, a ragged ring of pale ice-blue flares out from the stem like a second splash beneath the first. Two supports come with the piece: a small black block immediately beneath the stem and a tall black plinth under that.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eEverything Below the Crown Is Doing the Work\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA splash lifted onto a stem is a different object from a splash lying down, and everything below the crown is doing that work. The stem is twisted rather than straight, so it carries the eye up with a turn in it, and it is the strongest colour in the piece: the crown above is pale and open, and the stem reads as where all the material went. Two supports rather than one are what put the crown at standing height, and the small block between them stops the twist meeting the stone square.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFloor work, and somebody has to be able to get round at least one side of it. The plinth is square-footed and will rock on a rug or a threshold. What is behind it matters far more than what is under it, and a plain wall serves it best. At 153cm the peaks of the crown come up to about eye level, so a standing visitor looks across the splash rather than up at it, and the twisted stem is what reads from across the room.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003ePlinth Heights, the Stem and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOurs is a 3–4 week build as standard, and a 5–6 week build when the commission is bespoke. The crown is drawn to more peaks, the stem is cast in a richer cobalt, and the plinth is cut at other heights. Plinth height is picked to suit the room, and the splash above is made in proportion to it. The casting and both supports travel in separate crates; the plinth wants two people, and the casting is lifted with one hand under the crown and one round the foot of the stem, never by the peaks.
