blue-opening-bowl-wave-cast-resin-sculpture-80cm
Blue Opening Bowl Wave Cast Resin Sculpture - 80cm

Description

This cast resin sculpture opens outwards instead of upwards, its crumpled blue walls flaring into a wide, open bowl whose rim rises and falls in folded lobes and reaches out at either end in a long wing. The blue is deepest in the lower folds and down the outer walls and pales on the inner faces, running almost clear at the tip of one wing while the other stays blue to its point. The edge is left uneven in profile, rippled the way a wave breaks rather than cut to a circle, and the whole form rises from a narrow foot on the small round black base that comes with it.

It Opens Outwards Instead of Up

An open form is judged on its rim and on nothing else. The moment the edge comes up higher on one side than the other, the bowl looks tipped rather than open, and the piece reads as an accident. That is not the same as being regular: the rim here rises and falls like water, and what has to be true is the average of it, not the line itself. Getting an uneven edge to average level is a harder judgement than cutting it straight, because there is no straight line anywhere to check against; the only test is walking round it and seeing whether the bowl still reads as open from every side.

It is looked into rather than at, so it belongs below eye level and away from anything that would sit in front of the rim. A tall vase or a lamp beside it cuts the rim at the height it matters and the bowl closes up. A dining table, a low table or a wide island all put the whole opening in view. It is wide for its height and reads as a pool of colour from a distance, so it also wants enough space round it not to be crowded. Overhead light fills the hollow and makes the blue read at its deepest.

A Rim That Has to Come Up Level, and Delivery

Count on the difference between standard and bespoke: 3–4 weeks or 5–6. The wings at either end can reach out longer or sit close in to the bowl, the width is drawn to order, the blue is taken deeper or run out to clear, and a version with a broken rim is made. The depth of the hollow is set at order. It is packed on its base in one foam-lined case, the rim faced all the way round, and it is lifted out by the solid hollow, never by a wing, and set down. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A crumpled blue wave opening into a wide bowl with a wing at either end fits among our organic sculptures, our resin sculptures and our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

38cm

Width

80cm

Depth

55cm

Base

15 x 15 x 2cm

Material

Cast Blue Resin
