A square black marble block is included beneath the band.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eScrolls Set at Uneven Heights Up One Band\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA loop that leaves the line of the band has to return to it, and each one adds to what the block underneath has to answer. The scrolls are set at uneven heights for that reason: spaced evenly they would put the whole of the reach on one side of the stone and the piece would want a wider foot than it has. A band looping back through itself puts two and three thicknesses in the way at once, and a tinted body gives each of them its own weight of colour. Polished on both faces of the band and inside every loop, which is most of the surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt wants the loops at or above eye level, which means a console rather than a low table. Put something pale behind it: deep blue on a dark ground closes into one silhouette. Light from behind opens the loops right through; from in front they stack into one mass. Add a loop and the band grows, because every loop keeps the clearance it needs instead of being squeezed. Ribbon and block travel in one crate and are bedded together on site.
