Two ribbed block legs carry it, worked to the same pitch. The blue is strongest through the middle of the slab and clears toward the top surface, which is what makes the seat look deeper than it is.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eRibs Running the Length of the Seat\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eRibbing along the length is the direction that shows a fault, because each rib runs the whole length of the bench unbroken and the slightest wander in it is visible from standing. Each rib is therefore run in one continuous pass rather than in sections, and the pitch is set out from the centre of the slab outward so both long edges finish on a full rib. The legs are ribbed to match and their ribs stand vertical against the slab's horizontal ones, which is the crossing that has to be worked by hand at each junction. The blue is put in during the casting, which is why it sits in the body and the ribs cut through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA bench at this length is one person and a bag, or two people who know each other: an entrance, the end of a bed, a run of wall in a living room. The ribs read along the length, so a position you look down rather than across does more for it. Both blocks come in from the ends and want to be left visible. Against a pale floor the blue reads as a band floating in the slab, which is the effect the grade is for.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eRib Pitch, Colour Depth and Setting It Down\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eBespoke commissions take 5–6 weeks; standard pieces take 3–4. Rib pitch is set at order and runs from a broad flute to a fine reed, and the seat is offered plain with only the legs ribbed. Colour is open in both senses: the blue can be brought to the surface instead of held in the body, taken through a green, a grey or an amber, or left out. Block position along the slab is set at order. Both length and seat height are yours to set at order. Slab and blocks travel separately, the slab crated on edge, and two people set it down onto the blocks in place. Nothing is fixed to the floor.
