Blue through the whole band, deepest along the folded edges and clearing across the flats between them. The flats between the folds are left clear enough to see through. The plinth beneath it is black marble, as wide as the band.

A Band Folded Rather Than Turned

What the eye counts on this piece is edges, and a folded band offers twice as many of them as a turned one of the same height. Each reversal brings an edge forward where a turn would have carried a face past, and the spacing is set so that no two of those edges arrive together. Every reversal doubles the depth of tinted resin the eye has to look through, which is why the fold edges come out darkest with nothing added to them at all. Polished on both faces with the fold edges left sharp.

Floor work for a hall, and the plinth brings the band to a standing eye. Give it a pale ground: the folded edges carry the colour and want somewhere quiet to finish. Light from one side finds every fold; from the front the band reads as one flat sheet. The zigzag carries; the fold edges are a near-view fact.

More Folds, a New Plinth, and Two Crates

From order, a standard piece runs to 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission to 5–6. Ask us for a greater count of folds, for another tone through the band, or for the plinth cut to another plan. Add a fold and the plinth is cut to match, so the two keep the height they are drawn around. The plinth and the band are crated apart and put together on site. Three people and a trolley; the plinth is set before the band goes on it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A blue band folded into a zigzag belongs to our organic sculptures; its reversals, each edge darkest, join our resin sculptures, and an entrance, its plinth bringing it up to a standing eye, places it within our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

97.5cm

Width

39cm

Depth

26cm

Plinth

39 x 32 x 52cm

Material

Cast Blue Resin on a Black Marble Plinth
