Every part of the surface is pressed into shallow dimples, inside the curve as well as out, and the blue sits in the outer skin and clears through the body so the inner face reads almost colourless. It is delivered as the casting alone, seated on the low point of its curve.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Surface Pressed Everywhere at Once\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA dimpled surface on a transparent body is doing something a dimpled surface on an opaque one cannot. Each hollow is a small lens and there are two layers of them, one on the near face and one on the far, so what arrives at the eye is the far field seen through the near one. Move a hand's width and the two shift against each other and the whole surface appears to crawl. That is the reason the dimples are pressed shallow rather than deep: at any real depth each hollow would act as a proper lens and the effect would break into a scatter of bright points. Kept shallow they bend the light only slightly, and the interference stays a slow movement across the piece rather than a sparkle on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is a desk or shelf piece and is meant to be seen from close and from more than one position, because the dimpling only does its work when the viewer moves. A fixed position in a corner wastes most of what it does. It wants light behind it or to one side: a frontal light bounces off the near field and the far one is lost, which leaves the piece looking merely textured.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Dimpling, the Blue, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eReckon on 3–4 weeks for a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks for a bespoke one. The dimples are pressed finer or over less of the body, and the blue is lifted or deepened. The curl is also cast at other diameters with the same pressing. A deeper dimple is made and is worth seeing before it is chosen, for the reason above. The blue is run right through the body instead of sitting in the skin, which removes the difference between the inner and outer faces. One box holds it, seated on the low point of its curve, and it comes out held by its belly, never by the raised end.
