The band twists as it climbs, turning its inner face to the front in the upper loop, where the blue thins to a pale, icy tone, while the lower loop and the outer edges hold a deep sapphire. Its white marble block is included.

A Band Twisting Through a Figure of Eight

A closed loop is a shape with no beginning, and the eye hunts for one until it is given something. The crossing gives it here, set a little below the middle, so the figure divides into one broad loop and one tighter one, which the eye reads as a figure rather than a pattern. The twist does the rest. Because the band turns as it climbs, the upper loop shows its inner face, and there the colour clears almost to ice, while the tighter loop and every outer edge stay a deep sapphire. The frosting keeps that change soft, a gradual clearing rather than a line, and it stops the surface returning the room along the band.

With its block the figure of eight stands 48cm high, so a console, a desk or a wide shelf will take it, set where people meet it head on and from either side, since the twist changes the figure as you move round it. It wants a plain ground behind, because the whole piece is an outline and a patterned wall competes directly with it. Light from behind brightens the pale face inside the upper loop; light from the front gathers the band into one deep blue shape.

The Crossing, the Grade, and Delivery

Plan for 3–4 weeks on a standard piece and 5–6 weeks on a bespoke commission. The crossing can be moved up or down the loop, which changes the proportion of the two loops and alters the piece more than anything else. The band can be twisted more tightly or more loosely, the section drawn rounder or flatter, and the blue graded more strongly or held deep all over. A high polish can replace the frosting, though it returns the room along the whole band and competes with the colour, and the block can be cut in black marble. It ships flat on its side, the stone boxed apart. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A loop crossing itself once is indoor sculpture; a closed curve is contemporary sculpture; and the blue is graded inside resin sculpture.

Specification

Height

42cm

Width

36cm

Depth

34cm

Base

30 x 30 x 6cm

Material

Cast Blue Resin on White Marble
